MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The No. 7 Notre Dame men’s tennis team cruised into the second round of the Blue Gray Tennis Classic following its 4-0 victory over Texas A&M Corpus Christi. The Irish improve to 12-2 on the season with their sixth consecutive victory, while the Islanders drop to 6-4.
Notre Dame captured the all-important doubles point. Senior Stephen Bass (Bronxville, NY) and junior Andrew Roth (Houston, TX) opened doubles play with an 8-3 rout of Jose Zunino and Jose Ycaza at No. 3. Bass and Roth improved to 11-4 overall and 8-3 in dual matches.
Senior Barry King (Dublin, Ireland) and sophomore Brett Helgeson (Overland Park, KS) clinched the 1-0 for the Irish with their 8-5 triumph over Raul Morant-Rivas and Mikhail Pavlov at No. 2. The Notre Dame tandem now stands 18-6 overall and 10-3 in dual action.
The Irish quickly pushed their lead to 2-0 following Roth’s win at No. 6 singles. He had no trouble handling Joey Farias in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1. Roth improved to 15-10 overall and 7-5 in dual matches.
Notre Dame put the match away following a pair of straight-set victories from #57 junior Sheeva Parbhu (Omaha, NE) and #107 Helgeson. Parbhu cruised past Morant-Rivas, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 2, while Helgeson knocked off Pavlov, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 3.
Parbhu improved to 20-9 overall and 10-3 in dual action. Helgeson now stands 19-5 and 11-2.
The Irish return to action later Friday afternoon with a match against No. 40 Auburn.
