SEATTLE, Wash. – In the first day of competition at the 2008 ITA National Team Indoor Championship, the No. 9 Notre Dame men’s tennis team met up with No. 8 UCLA. The Irish were defeated in the first round, 4-0, and will move on to the consolation bracket where they will face No. 16 Penn State.
In the UCLA match, the men went down early losing the doubles point, despite a strong win from Brett Helgeson and Sheeva Parbhu. The Irish duo took down the pair of Harel Srugo and Nick Meister of UCLA in easy fashion, winning the match 8-2.
The early win from Helgeson and Parbhu would not be enough for the men to take the doubles point as Andrew Roth and Stephen Havens were defeated by Mathieu Dehaine and Holden Seguso in a closer match, 8-6. To round out the doubles action the Irish pair of Tyler Davis and Santiago Montoya lost to Mike Look and Jeremy Drean, 8-4. UCLA went on to win the first three matches in singles action to secure the win, 4-0.
Now in the consolation bracket of the ITA National Team Indoor Championship, the Irish are set up to meet Penn State on Saturday with match time set for 11 a.m. (PT) in Seattle, Wash. Notre Dame opened up the dual-match season against the Nittany Lions, earning its first win of the season, 5-2. The Irish will look to once again find success over Penn State and earn a win.
