SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Jared Newson has been named an assistant coach and head of player development for Notre Dame women’s basketball ahead of the 2026-27 season, the program announced on Friday.
Newson joins the Irish with a wealth of experience under his belt, including most recently serving as director of basketball for Unrivaled’s Phantom BC, a group that made the 2026 Unrivaled Championship.
“I am thrilled to welcome Jared to our Notre Dame family and coaching staff,” Karen and Kevin Keyes Family Head Women’s Basketball Coach Niele Ivey said. “He brings a wealth of experience, a strong work ethic and a proven ability to develop talent. Jared is detail-oriented and knowledgeable, and he is a perfect fit for our staff. Excited to have him on board — welcome, Jared!”
A native of Belleville, Illinois, Newson spent more than a decade playing professional basketball primarily in Europe; he played in Germany, Poland, Finland, France, Australia and Puerto Rico. Between overseas stints, Newson played in the NBA D-League (now known as the NBA G-League) as a player for the Sioux Falls Skyforce and Bakersfield Jam in 2009-10, appearing in 46 total games. He attended Dallas Mavericks training camp in 2007 as well.
Newson played undergraduate basketball at the University of Tennessee at Martin, and he was inducted into their Athletics Hall of Fame in 2014. He was a two-time All-Ohio Valley Conference performer — including a spot on the OVC’s First Team in 2005-06 when his 18.8 points per game ranked second in the conference.
After three seasons at UT Martin, Newson left the program as the third all-time leading scorer with 1,347 points. He still ranks in the top 10 in program history in several career statistical categories, including field goals made (452), free throws made (378), rebounds (535) and steals (128).
