Notre Dame Battles Two Top-25 Teams on the Road

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The University of Notre Dame men’s tennis team was on the road for a pair of Atlantic Coast Conference matches against top-25 teams. The Irish lost to #24 ranked North Carolina in Chapel Hill on Friday 4-0. Dominko and Malkowski picked up a ranked road win against the #61 ranked doubles team from UNC by a 6-4 score. In singles, the top of the Irish lineup all remained unfinished in the dual match when the Tar Heels clinched the victory. Dominko was a game away from winning his match as he led 5-2 in the third set against the #108 ranked player in the country. Thompson was two games away from a win himself at #3 singles, up 4-1 in the third set against the #82 player in the country.

On Sunday, the Irish drove a few miles the other direction to take on #13 Duke in Durham in a close match that would see the home team win 5-2. Doubles would go the way of the Blue Devils but freshman Kyran Magimay, playing #5 singles this weekend, evened the team score at one-all when he ran away with a 6-3, 6-2 win. Yu Zhang followed with another straight set victory at #6 by a 6-2, 6-3 score to give the Irish the lead. But the remaining matches would all swing the way of Duke. Corsillo fought back in the second but dropped the #4 contest. A pair of three setters at the top two spots saw Notre Dame grab the first set on both courts but they could not continue their momentum as Giraldez and Dominko both lost to their ranked opponents. Thompson, who played the longest first set of the day at more than an hour, would be the last off the court for the Irish at #3 singles.
