BOSTON – The University of Notre Dame men’s tennis team continued play in the Harvard Fall Invitational on Saturday. The Irish, playing in their third tournament in as many weeks to open the 2002-03 season, registered four victories on the second day of the tournament, taking on Brown and Rutgers in singles matches and Harvard in doubles action.
Freshmen Patrick Buchanan (Fullerton, Calif.) and Eric Langenkamp (Scarsdale, N.Y.) continued their hot doubles play on Saturday, defeating Jordan Bohnen and Brandon Chiu of Harvard 9-8 (7-5). The pair of first-year players are 2-0 as a doubles team, while Buchanan is 4-0 overall in collegiate doubles competition and Langenkamp is 4-2.
In singles action, three Irish players registered victories with the results of two other matches unavailable. Freshman Sergey Leonyuk (Boca Raton, Fla.) was victorious in singles for the first time in his collegiate career, downing Tyler Deming of Rutgers 6-4, 6-2. Leonyuk did not play in either of the first two Irish tournaments of the fall. Junior Ben Hatten (Potomac, Md.) won his second singles match in as many days, a 3-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-5) triumph over Brown’s Phil Charm, after entering the tournament 0-3 in singles this fall. Classmate Nicolas Lopez-Acevedo (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) added a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Brook Deming of Rutgers.
Notre Dame players are slated to take on Harvard at 10:00 a.m. (EDT) on Sunday in singles matches before facing Alabama in doubles at Noon (EDT).
