Notre Dame Drops To 10th After 36 Holes At Stanford's Nelson Invitational

Notre Dame, Ind. – The Notre Dame men’s golf team shot a score of three-over par 287 for the second straight day at the Nelson Invitational on Saturday. The Irish’s 36-hole total of 574 has the team in 10th place in the 15-team field, 17 strokes behind tournament-leader Washington. The Huskies shot 278 in the second round for a total of 11-under par 557 to take a two-stroke lead over second-place, defending tournament-champion Duke (278-281-559). The 54-hole tournament is being played on the par-71, 6,786-yard Stanford Golf Course.

Following Duke, Kansas is third with 562 (279-283) and Colorado trails the Jayhawks by one stroke with a two-round total of 563 (279-284), placing the team in fourth.

Individually, the Irish are being led by freshmen Cole Isban (South Bend, Ind./Mishawaka Marian HS) and Shane Sigsbee (McKinney, Texas/McKinney HS). The two rookies are in a 17th-place tie with a score of two-under par 140. Isban followed a season-best 69 in the first round with an even-par 71 on Saturday and Sigsbee has turned in identical totals of 70 in both rounds of competition.

The top Irish performer during the first two days of action has been sophomore Eric Deutsch (Rochester, Minn./Lourdes HS) who is competing as an individual entrant. Deutsch fired a score of one-under par 70 on day two after shooting 69 on Friday. The sophomore is tied in 10th, seven strokes behind tournament-leader Brad Heaven of Toledo who continued his impressive play by putting up a 68 in the second round after an opening-round score of seven-under par 64.

Behind Heaven’s 132, Duke’s Ryan Blaum (66-69) and Andrew Price of Kansas (67-68) are tied in second place, three strokes off the lead with a 135.

Following Isban and Sigsbee for Notre Dame is sophomore Tommy Balderston (Boca Raton, Fla./St. Andrew’s HS) who posted a 71 in the second round for a 36-hole mark of three-over par 145 (74-71). Balderston is tied in 47th place after the first two days of the tournament.

After Balderston, Scott Gustafson (Rochester, Minn./Eden Prairie HS) has turned in scores of 74 and 75 for a 149 total, placing him in a 62nd-place tie, and sophomore Mark Baldwin (Laconia, N.H./New Hampton Prep) rounds out Notre Dame’s lineup with a two-round score of 153 (76-77).

The final round of the Nelson Invitational will begin on Sunday morning, October 26, with an 8:00 a.m. (PDT) shotgun start.
