Notre Dame Georgetown Box Score
SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — Darrel Owens and Roy Hibbert each scored 18 points and No. 21 Georgetown followed its upset of top-ranked Duke with an 85-82 double-overtime victory over Notre Dame on Tuesday night.
The Hoyas (13-4, 4-2 Big East), who led by 15 points in the first half, seemed to have the game won in regulation. But Brandon Bowman fouled Colin Falls as he hit a 3-pointer with 1.8 seconds left and he completed the four-point play to tie the game at 69.
At the end of the first overtime with the score 76-76, Notre Dame’s Rob Kurz stuffed a shot in the lane by Jonathan Wallace with 1.8 seconds left. Kurz threw a length-of-the-court inbounds pass that bounced to Chris Quinn, whose shot bounced off the side of the rim.
Quinn had 26 points and 10 assists for the Irish (10-7, 1-5), who never led in the game and are off to their worst Big East start since opening 1-5 in 1996-97.
Owens’ 3-pointer with 2:18 left in the second overtime gave the Hoyas an 83-79 lead. Hibbert scored inside with 1:08 left to make it 85-81. The Irish were 2-of-5 from the free throw line in the second overtime.
Ashanti Cook had 16 points for the Hoyas, while Jeff Green had 12 and Wallace 10. Hibbert had 13 rebounds for Georgetown, which outrebounded the Irish 45-42.
Falls had 18 points and Kurz added 14 for Notre Dame, which lost 100-97 in double overtime at Pittsburgh on Jan. 4.
The game marked the third time in the past seven games Georgetown and Notre Dame have gone to overtime. The Irish won in quadruple overtime in Washington in 2002 and at home in double overtime in 2003. The victory was just the second in the seven games for the Hoyas.
The Hoyas picked up where they left off Saturday against Duke. The Hoyas, who shot a season-high 61.5 percent in upsetting the Blue Devils, started the game against Notre Dame by making six of their first nine shots, and shot 44 percent in the first half. But they shot just 36 percent in the second half while the Irish shot 54 percent to get back in the game.
