NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Former Notre Dame volleyball player Jaimie Lee has been presented with a $5,000 scholarship from the annual NCAA postgraduate scholarship program. Lee is one of 107 student-athletes selected from among all NCAA divisions and all men’s and women’s sports, except football and basketball (scholarships in those sports were previously awarded).

The scholarship recipients include 36 men and 71 women, with Lee among the 27 Division I women student-athletes who were presented with the prestigious scholarships. Lee and BYU graduate Amy Steele-Gant-both of whom currently are training with the USA Volleyball program–are the only Division I women’s volleyball players among the scholarship recipients.

The scholarships are awarded to student-athletes who maintain at least a 3.000 cumulative grade-point average (4.000 scale) and perform with distinction in varsity competition.

Lee also previously received a $2,000 postgraduate scholarship from the BIG EAST Conference through the Target Scholar-Athlete program.

Former Notre Dame men’s basketball player Pat Garrity was an earlier recipient of an 1997-98 NCAA postgraduate scholarship, in the men’s basketball awards program.

The NCAA annually awards 174 postgraduate scholarships to student-athletes who have excelled academically and athletically and are in their last year of intercollegiate athletics competition. In addition to the following 107 winners, 35 were presented earlier this year to student-athletes in football and 32 to student-athletes in basketball (16 for men and 16 for women) at NCAA member institutions. Since 1964, the NCAA has awarded more than 3,200 scholarships, valued at more than $9,000,000.

Lee graduated from Notre Dame in May of 1998 with a 3.43 cumulative grade-point average in sociology while earning second team GTE Academic All-America honors for fall and winter “at-large” sports. She was a Volleyball magazine 1997 honorable mention All-American and captured BIG EAST player of the year honors in both 1997 and ’98. She was one of five Notre Dame senior student-athletes to receive the 1997-98 Byron Kanaley Award, which recognizes those who are “most exemplary as students and leaders”, and is the Notre Dame athletic department’s nominee for the NCAA Women of the Year awards program (winners are yet to be announced).

Lee is a fixture in the Notre Dame volleyball record book and is the program’s only player to rank in the top 10 for career kills, hitting percentage, digs, aces, blocks and assists.

The following are the 1998 postgraduate scholarship winners in sports other than football and basketball.
