GOLF, III. – The University of Notre Dame women’s golf team, currently ranked 26th in the latest Golfstat rankings, is in fourth place following day one of the Windy City Collegiate Classic at the Glen View Golf Club in Golf, Ill. The Irish golfers combined for a 12-over par 588 (294-294) after two rounds (36 holes) in the tournament that features nine other ranked opponents.

Glen View Golf Club is a par 72 course that measures 6,333 yards.

Notre Dame was led by its two freshmen Lindsey Weaver (Scottsdale, Ariz.) and Talia Campbell (Dallas, Texas). Weaver enters tomorrow’s final round of competition on Tuesday tied for first with Amy Simanton of UC Davis. She carded a three-under par 141 following rounds of 70 and 71, while Campbell is in a six-way tie for seventh with a one-over par 145 as she shot rounds of 73 and 72.

The Irish have only four players entered in their second event of the fall season. Sophomore Ashley Armstrong (Flossmoor, Ill.) is sidelined with an ankle injury and was unable to compete in this tournament.

“We had a great team effort today,” head coach Susan Holt remarks. “With only four players competing, I thought our team handled the situation with a lot of confidence. We’re hoping we can back up what we did today with a fantastic finish. We’ve been challenged by the competition we are facing in this tournament and it has been good for us to have such strong teams to play against this early in the season.”

Second-ranked Washington is in first place with a four-over par 580 (287-293), while No. 6 Arizona is two shots back with a six-over par 582 (293-289). No. 22 Iowa State is two strokes ahead of the Irish as the Cyclones shot a 10-over par 586 (296-290).

No. 19 UC Davis is in fifth place following a 14-over par 590 (297-293). No. 14 Oklahoma and No. 34 Northwestern are tied for sixth at 16-over par. Both the Sooners and Wildcats shot identical rounds of 298 and 294.

Top-ranked Texas Tech is in eighth place at 22-over par (598) and is followed by No. 50 Wisconsin at 599. TCU rounds out the top 10 as the Horned Frogs finished with 26-over par 602. The tournament’s other ranked team, No. 32 Ohio, is an 11th place at +27 with a two-round total of 603.

Weaver led the way all day for the Irish. In the first round, she shot a two-under par 70 as she started the day from the 10th hole. She was even through her first seven holes before picking up a birdie on hole 17(par four). Weaver highlighted the remaining front nine of round one by making eagle on hole six, a par five, with a distance of 503 yards.

Weaver carried over her performance in round two by carding a one-under par 71. Three straight birdies on the back nine helped her cancel out a pair of bogeys and stay one-under par with a 35. A bogey on hole three and a birdie on hole four put Weaver at even par with a 36 on the front nine.

With today’s performance, the freshman has now shot a total three of her five round under par on the year.

Campbell came out strong in round one firing an eagle on hole 18 (par four). A pair of birdies on the back nine helped her shoot even through her first nine. She finished round one with a one-over par 73.

After firing two double bogeys on a pair of par fives in round one Campbell remarkably picked up her second eagle of the day in round two on hole 15 (par five) which measured a distance of 505 yards. She finished even in round two and combined for a one-over par 145 on the day.

Sophomore Kelly Oride (Lihue, Hawaii) was one of the most consistent Irish golfers on the day by paring 30 of 36 holes. She fired a two-over par on her first nine holes. Oride nearly held par on the front nine, but gave up a bogey on hole four to finish with a one-over par 37. She finished with a three-over par 75 in round one.

Oride picked up her first birdie of the day just two holes into round two. A bogey on hole 18 kept her score even at 36 before facing the front nine. Oride remained even until hole four where a bogey put her one-over par. A poised finish through the final five holes of round two gave her a one-over par 73 score.

Oride finished the day tied for 22nd place with a four-over par 148.

Junior Kristina Nhim (Cypress, Calif.) bogeyed just her second hole in during round one, but nevertheless showed great recovery by shooting par the rest of the way through the first nine. Nhim finished with a four-over par 76.

Nhim had a tough battle on the back nine to begin round two as she accumulated five bogeys to fire a four-over par 40. Nhim once again bounced back on the front nine surrendering only two bogeys and paring the other seven holes. Nhim finished with a ten-over par 154 and is tied for 53rd.

Tomorrow’s final round at the Windy City Collegiate Championship will consist of 18 holes with play beginning in the morning.
