MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The 46th-ranked University of Notre Dame men’s tennis team dropped a 4-0 decision to #68 Boise State on Saturday afternoon in consolation action in the Blue/Gray National Tennis Classic. After winning the doubles point, the Broncos (10-6) faced stiff competition in singles, but got victories in the first three matches done, leaving the final three contests to be abandoned. Notre Dame (5-8) will return to action with a pair of important home matches next weekend, playing host to #12 Minnesota on Saturday and BIG EAST rival #44 Virginia Tech on Sunday, with both contests slated for a 1 p.m. (EDT) start.
Boise State got wins at Nos. 1 and 3 doubles, both by 8-3 scores, to take the initial point of the match. Marcus Berntson and Guillaume Bouvier were winners at the top of the lineup, while Matias Silva and Ehren Vaughan won at the bottom. The No. 2 match was abandoned.
In singles, the Broncos got a pair of straight-set wins to take a 3-0 lead. Nils Klemann topped Irish senior Brian Farrell (Lilburn, Ga./St. Pius X H.S.) 6-4, 6-1 at No. 4 and Berntson, ranked 67th nationally in singles, beat junior Luis Haddock (Caguas, P.R./Notre Dame H.S.) 6-4, 6-2 at No. 1. With each of the other four matches tight, the Irish still had a chance for a comeback victory until Thomas Schoeck completed a 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 triumph at No. 3 over sophomore Brent D’Amico (Castle Rock, Colo./St. Stephen’s Episcopal School) to clinch the Bronco victory. The remaining singles matches were abandoned.
