Notre Dame Men's Cross Country Team Wins Valparaiso Invitational

Valparaiso, Ind. – The Notre Dame men’s cross country team opened up the season with a victory at the Valparaiso Invitational on Friday, Sept. 10. Sophomore Dan Driscoll took the individual title in a time of 25:30 as he propelled the group of Irish runners that swept the top-six spots of the race. In the women’s competition, Notre Dame placed third as a team and junior Elizabeth Webster took home third as well in the individual standings. University of Wisconsin-Madison’s Katrena Runthaug won the women’s race in a time of 22:30 and Western Michigan was the women’s team champion.

The top-six Irish runners all finished within 27-seconds of each other as they dominated the final standings. Ryan Johnson was right on the heels of his teammate Driscoll, finishing just a fraction later as both of their official times were listed at 25:30. Mike Manning and Austin Weaver also were neck and neck for the Irish as their times were both 25:34, with the edge going to Manning, who placed third. Vinnie Ambrico placed fifth in a time of 25:45 and A.J. Andrassy was sixth as he crossed the finish line in 25:57. Terry Lennon was two spots back in seventh-place for the Irish, finishing in a time of 26:39.

Irish sophomore Katie DeRusso joined Webster as a top-10 finisher in the women’s race. DeRusso clocked in at 23:19, which was good for eighth-place. Notre Dame’s Jennifer Walls (23:43), Jennifer Richard (23:48), and Christine Arnerich (23:49) finished consecutively in spots 13-15. Freshman Alyson Parker clocked in a time of 24:29 in her first collegiate race, while Brianne Schmidt (25:33) and Kathleen Coverick (26:04) rounded out the group of Irish runners.

The Notre Dame women’s team is ranked fourth according to the finishlynx.com preseason poll. Head coach Tim Connelly did not take his regular eight runners to Valparaiso in order to focus on getting some of his less-seasoned runners valuable race experience.
