Notre Dame Men's And Women's Teams Both Qualify For NCAA Championships

Nov. 16, 2013

NOTRE DAME, Ind. — After strong team performances at the Great Lakes NCAA Regional Championships yesterday, both the men’s and women’s cross country teams have received at-large bids to the NCAA Championships, which take place next Saturday, Nov. 23 in Terre Haute, Ind.

The men finished third of 31 teams while the women placed fourth of 33 teams at the Great Lakes Regionals. Seniors Kelly Curran and Martin Grady and fifth-year student Jeremy Rae all finished in the top ten individually out of over 200 runners.

“We kind of anticipated the bid after yesterday’s performance,” says men’s head coach Joe Piane. “That’s the best race our men have had in the past couple years, so they did exactly what we asked of them. But the most important thing for us to do at that race is qualify, and we did that, so we’re very happy.”

The Notre Dame teams were among 13 schools to get an at-large bid for each gender. There are 31 teams competing overall for each of the men’s and women’s championships.

Indiana State will host the championships Saturday, Nov. 23 at the Wabash Valley Family Sports Center, located in Terre Haute, Ind. The men’s race will begin at 12 p.m. ET with the women getting started at 1:15 p.m.
