THE VIRGINIA SERIES
Virginia leads it 5-4, with the Cavaliers Saturday making only their second visit to South Bend (the first was a 2014 regular-season contest). Notre Dame has won three straight in the series, including an NCAA quarterfinal triumph in 2012 then ACC regular-season wins in 2014 in South Bend and in 2015 in Charlottesville. This will be the first time that one of the teams has not been ranked–both teams have been in the top 20 in all nine previous matchups. The Irish twice lost to Virginia when the Cavs ranked number one in the country (2003 and 2006). Four of the previous nine games have been NCAA Championship contests.
Home: 1-0; Away: 2-4; Neutral: 1-1
