Notre Dame Pushes Ahead At ITA Midwest Regional Championships

Oct. 20, 2013

COLUMBUS, Ohio — In the fourth day of the ITA Midwest Regional Championships, the Irish pushed ahead in both brackets, with senior Greg Andrews making it through to the singles semifinals and the doubles finals with sophomore Alex Lawson. The tournament is hosted by Ohio State University at the Varsity Tennis Center and Racquet Club of Columbus.

Andrews defeated Indre of Western Michigan, 7-6, 6-4. Tomorrow, he will face ninth seed Callahan of Ohio State in the semifinals.

In the doubles quarterfinals, Lawson and Andrews beat Jesse and Gosea of Illinois, 8-5. They then moved into the semifinals, taking down the No. 1-seeded Kopinski and Guignon of Illinois. The close match came down to a tiebreaker and the Irish prevailed, 8-7(5).

Sophomore Quentin Monaghan and freshman Josh Hagar also played in doubles quarterfinals but fell to the second-seeded Metka and Kobelt of Ohio State. Lawson and Andrews will play against that same team for the doubles championship tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m.
