Dec. 11, 2006

The Notre Dame baseball team’s 2007 schedule has been approved for release, with one recent change in regards to the opening-week opponents. Highlights from the 2007 schedule include early-season games in Texas and South Carolina, followed by 10 games in three different Florida cities prior to the home opener in mid-March. Three of the team’s four BIG EAST road series – at Pittsburgh, Cincinnati and Louisville – will allow the Irish to travel via chartered bus (the other road series is at Rutgers) while the top five BIG EAST home series will include games versus some top contenders such as South Florida, West Virginia and Connecticut. The midweek games at Alumni Field feature some of Notre Dame’s traditional non-conference rivals, most notably Central Michigan, Purdue and Ball State.

See the schedule link on the baseball page (also included below) for the full 56-game listing (also check back later to und.com for a PDF version of the ’07 schedule).

Notre Dame will open the 2007 season in the familiar surroundings of San Antonio’s Wolff Stadium, as the Irish pay a visit to the lone star state for the 20th time in the past 28 seasons. The season-opening weekend originally was set to feature Notre Dame playing Northwestern in a three-game series, but the Wildcats recently had to cancel their commitment to play in the series. The Irish were able to reschedule a game with Prairie View A&M – a 2006 NCAA Tournament team – as the season opener on Feb. 17 (noon), followed by a pair of games versus a Texas State squad that annually is in the running for an NCAA berth (Feb. 17, 3:00; Feb. 18, noon).

The second weekend of the season will see Notre Dame head to Myrtle Beach and Coastal Federal Field for the Baseball at the Beach Tournament (March 23-25). The first two games for the Irish in South Carolina will come versus teams that qualified for the 2006 NCAAs – UNC-Wilmington and TCU – followed by a matchup versus the tournament’s host team, Coastal Carolina.

Week-three of the 2007 season again will send Notre Dame to the southeast, for the Stetson tournament (March 2-4) that includes the always-tough homestanding Hatters, plus national power Nebraska and Iowa. The Irish then will return to Florida days later for spring break, with four games in both Clearwater (March 10-11) and Fort Myers (March 14-17).

The Clearwater games will be played at Brighthouse Networks Field (site of the 2006 BIG EAST Tournament), versus Sacred Heart – one of seven teams on Notre Dame’s 2007 schedule that played in the ’06 NCAAs – Duquesne and Harvard. During the back end of Spring Break, the FGCU Classic will be held at Swanson Field, as the Irish face Dayton, New York Tech, Florida Gulf Coast and Harvard.

The past four seasons (2002-05) saw the Irish compile a 22-5 record when playing games in the state of Florida, including a 7-1 mark during 2006 games that were played in the sunshine state.

Each of the 12 BIG EAST baseball teams again is scheduled to play nine others in three-game series (Notre Dame will not face St. John’s or Villanova in the ’07 regular season). All but two of the series involving Notre Dame will be three-day series, with nine-inning doubleheaders scheduled for the first day of the two-day series at Rutgers (April 28-29) and Louisville (May 12-13).

Notre Dame’s five 2007 home BIG EAST series will feature games versus South Florida (March 23-25), Georgetown (April 14-16), West Virginia (April 20-22), Seton Hall (March 4-6) and Connecticut (March 18-20). The WVU series overlaps with the Notre Dame football team’s annual Blue-Gold weekend, featuring the team’s intrasquad scrimmage (Apri 21) and other festivities. The ND-WVU baseball game on the 21st will start at 3:05, with the football scrimmage taking place earlier that afternoon (time TBA).

Other teams that will visit Eck Stadium in 2007 include: Cleveland State (March 20), Western Michigan (March 21), Central Michigan (March 27), Chicago State (March 28), Oakland (April 3), IPFW (April 10), Bowling Green (April 11), Toledo (April 17), Purdue (April 18), Ball State (April 24), Valparaiso (April 25) and Illinois-Chicago (May 1).

In addition to the games at Rutgers and Louisville, the team’s BIG EAST road slate includes series with Pittsburgh (March 30-April 1) and Cincinnati (April 5-7). Notre Dame and Michigan again are scheduled to play at Fifth/Third Bank Ballpark in Comstock Park, Mich. (just outside of Grand Rapids), marking the 12th “Baseball Bash” meeting between the teams in the past 12 seasons.

The BIG EAST Tournament again will be played under the newer eight-team format from May 23-27, at a site that is TBA (sometime in January). The format will mirror the College World Series with two four-team brackets playing double-elimination games on the first four days. The bracket winners then will meet in a single title game on May 27.

The NCAA tournament regionals are set for June 1-4 and the super-regionals on June 8-10 (both at campus sites) while the College World Series will be June 15-25 at Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha, Neb.
