NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Notre Dame men’s golf head coach John Jasinski has announced the signing of Mike King (Sidney, Ohio), Eddie Peckels (Delray Beach, Fla.) and Greg Rodgers (Phoenix, Md.) to national letters-of-intent to attend the University beginning in the fall of 2004. Both Peckles and Rodgers are ranked in the top 50 nationally. All three players officially committed to join the program this past week.
King is a solid player who has developed his game both at Sidney High School and in national junior events. King has managed successful top finishes throughout his career and is coming off two impressive tournament wins in 2003. This year, King won the Collegiate Players Tour Junior Division National Championship as well as medalist honors at the AAU Junior Olympic Games.
“Mike(King)’s strong all-round game and undying determination will add to the team’s effort to produce championships. Notre Dame will definitely benefit from his participation,” said Jasinski.
Peckels will arrive to South Bend after completing his high school career at Pope John Paul II High School as one of the top players in the state of Florida. Peckels had an impressive spring in 2003, which included an eighth-place finish at the AJGA Taylor Made/Adidas Golf Junior Championship. However, his top achivement was winning the 2003 Florida State Class A High School Championship.
“We expect Eddie (Peckels) to make a smooth transition due to his focus and thoughtful demeanor. Eddie has a complete game with no exposed weaknesses. He will help grow our expectation to work hard and play for championships,” said Jasinski.
Rodgers, from St. Paul’s High School, will join the Irish as one of the top junior players in the nation. The Baltimore Sun 2003 High School Golfer of the Year, Rodgers was both an AJGA Polo Junior All-American honorable mention selection and first-team FCWT All-American in 2003. Rodgers also represented the United States in the 2003 Junior World Championships in Japan.
“With Greg Rodgers, we will receive a natural player, who seemingly on the surface, plays the game with ease. Greg has participated at a very high level with the crowning achievement of representing the United States in the world championships in Japan,” said Jasinski.
