NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Sophomore Doug Fortner (Tustin, Calif./Foothill) is among a group of four golfers tied for second place after Monday’s second round of the Fighting Irish Gridiron Golf Classic, being played at the Warren Golf Course (par 70/7,011 yards) on the Notre Dame campus. The Irish are in sixth place in the 12-team field through 36 holes at 24-over par 584 (289-295), while 25th-ranked Michigan State continues to set the pace at one-under par 559.
Fortner is at even-par 140 (68-72) through Monday’s play, as he goes in search of his first medalist trophy. Michigan State’s Ryan Brehm holds the 36-hole lead at four-under par 136 (72-64), thriving in spite of wet conditions caused by overnight thunderstorms that led tournament officials to invoke a “lift, clean and place” rule for the second round.
Other Notre Dame golfers currently among the top 20 in the 75-man field include junior Josh Sandman (Greensboro, N.C./Southeast Guilford), who is tied for 15th place at four-over par 144 (71-73), as well as sophomore Kyle Willis (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) and freshman Tyler Hock (Ocala, Fla./Forest), both of whom are among a group tied for 19th place at five-over par 144. Willis and Hock are playing this week’s tournament as individuals, and currently are the top two unattached golfers in the field.
Notre Dame returns to the links Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. (ET) for the final round of the Fighting Irish Gridiron Golf Classic, with the Irish starters scheduled to go off from the No. 1 tee in 10-minute intervals. Live in-progress scoring will be available via the Golfstat web site and final results will be posted on the official Notre Dame athletics web site (www.und.com) upon completion of the day’s action. Fans also can obtain updates on the Irish at the Fighting Irish Gridiron Golf Classic via the Notre Dame Sports Hotline (574-631-3000) and the Irish ALERT text message system (click here for more details).
