Columbus, Ohio – The Notre Dame men’s golf team shot a final round 311 on Sunday to finish in a tie for 13th at Ohio State’s Robert Kepler Invitational. The Irish finished the 54-hole tournament with a 936 (307-318-311) to finish 43 strokes behind tournament champion Ohio State. The Buckeyes fired a 29-over par 893 (297-294-302) on their home course, the par 72, 7,258-yard Scarlet Course, to win the tournament by four strokes over Illinois.
The Illini finished the day with a 296 to move from third to second with a 54-hole total of 897 (299-302-296). That put them three strokes ahead of third place Kentucky as the Wildcats finished with a 900 (306-301-293) for the weekend. The University of Indiana was fourth with a 901 (302-298-301) and Miami of Ohio rounded out the top five teams with a 906 (303-302-301).
Individually, Toledo’s Brad Heaven and Indiana’s Jeff Overton went into the final round of play tied with one-over par 143 totals and Heaven outdueled Overton in the final round with a 76 to give him a three-over par 219 for the tournament. Overton slid to a four-way tie for fourth as he fired a final round 78 for a 221. Ohio State’s Zach Doran and Illinois’ Patrick Nagle finished in a tie for second, one stroke behind Heaven with 220 totals. Joining Overton in fourth were Eric Phipps of Miami, James Lepp of Illinois and Ryan Yip of Kent State.
For Notre Dame, senior Brandon Lunke (San Antonio, Texas) and freshman Mark Baldwin (Laconia, N.H.) tied for 30th in the tournament with 14-over par totals of 230. Lunke shot rounds of 75, 77 and 78 for the weekend while Baldwin turned in rounds of 75, 80 and 75 for his 230.
Freshman Scott Gustafson (Eden Prairie, Minn.) tied for 60th in the tournament with a 20-over par 236. Gustafson shot 79, 81 and 76 for his 54 holes. Sophomore K.C. Wiseman (South Bend, Ind.) tied for 78th with a 241 (79-80-82) and Gavin Ferlic (Jr., South Bend, Ind.) was 84th with a 243 score for the weekend. Ferlic shot 78, 83 and 82 for the tournament.
The Irish will next be in action on April 21-22 when they play host to the BIG EAST Championship at the Warren Golf Course on the Notre Dame campus. Play will begin each morning at 8:00 a.m. (EST).
