The sixth-ranked Notre Dame women’s soccer team used a pair of goals from senior Jenny Heft for a 4-0 win over Villanova in battle of unbeaten teams in the BIG EAST Conference Mid-Atlantic division on Sunday at Alumni Field. Heft scored the game-winning goal in the 11th minute and again in the 51st minute to lead the Irish, who improve to 8-2-0 and 4-0-0 in Mid-Atlantic division games with the win. Villanova falls to 10-3-0, 3-1-0 with the loss, its seventh in seven games against the Irish. Irish goalkeepers LaKeysia Beene and Elizabeth Wagner combined to record Notre Dame?s third consecutive shutout and fifth consecutive against the Wildcats.
Notre Dame out shot Villanova 42-4 in the contest, marking the second consecutive game the Irish have taken at 40 shots after recording 44 on Friday night against Georgetown. Notre Dame had 10 corner kicks to Villanova?s one, while the Wildcats committed nine fouls to eight for the Irish. Notre Dame returns to action when it plays host to 15th-ranked Michigan at Alumni Field at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 5.
Heft scored her second consecutive game-winning goal at 10:02 when she received a pass from freshman Ashley Dryer and dribbled a pair of Villanova defenders. Heft fired a shot from 15 yards out into the lower right corner of the net. She had a chance to give Notre Dame a 2-0 lead in the 27th minute but her shot from the right wing bounced off the crossbar. The Irish took a 1-0 lead into halftime after out shooting the Wildcats 21-2 in the first half.
Heft made it 2-0 at 50:07 with a shot from 20 yards out on the right side that sailed into the upper right corner of the net beyond Villanova goalkeeper Janel Schillig. Junior Meotis Erikson made it 3-0 when she headed in a service from senior Kara Brown at 64:12. Erikson dribbled past midfield on the left side and reversed the ball to Brown on the right sideline. After Erikson?s run into the box, Brown served the ball from 30 yards on the right side, and Erikson headed the ball into the right corner from five yards out.
Brown closed out the scoring for the Irish when she took a pass from Mia Sarkesian and fired a shot from 25 yards out on the right wing toward the left side. The ball bounced in front of Schillig, slipped through her hands and trickled into the net at 80:26 for the 4-0 final score.
