Okeke and Smith Impress at Gary Wieneke Memorial

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The University of Notre Dame track and field team competed at the Gary Wieneke Memorial over the weekend, hosted by the University of Illinois. The Irish will be in action one more time at the Billy Hayes Invite. The ACC Championship meet will be the following week, starting on May 14.
Obiora Okeke continues to build off his performances from week to week. The Gary Wienke Memorial was no exception for the Hawthorne, California native. Okeke won the shot put with a season-best throw of 19.02m (62’ 5”). This ranks 21st in all of the NCAA Division I and puts him 11th on the 2026 NCAA Division I East Outdoor List.
Okeke also was the top Irish finisher in the discus, placing second with a throw of 53.68m (176’ 01”). He finished third in the hammer with a mark of 62.25m (204’ 2”).
Matthew Smith set a personal best in the men’s 800m, finishing second with a time of 1:47.21. This is his best performance in the 800m this season. Smith now owns the third fastest 800m time in Irish history. This puts him 28th on the 2026 NCAA Division I East Outdoor List.
Sarah David won the javelin with a mark of 41.82m (137’ 02”). Samantha Mancini finished second with a throw of 40.20m (131’ 10”).
Benjamin Pable followed up his outstanding Penn Relays performance with a second-place finish in the hammer, recording a throw of 65.57m (215’ 01”).
Julia Reglewski finished second in the shot put with a season-best throw of 14.56m (47’ 9.25”). Ore Olusi set a personal best with a mark of 14.19m (46’ 6.75”).
John Dearie finished first in the 400m hurdles with a time of 52.94.
Jillian Stafford recorded a mark of 56.13m (184’ 02”) in the hammer, finishing fourth.
Remy Finn and Lauren Huber set personal bests in the 200m. Finn finished fifth with a time of 24.40 while Huber placed tenth with a time of 24.94.
In the women’s 100m, Reese Johnson finished sixth with a season-best time of 12.18.
