The 4th-ranked Notre Dame women’s fencing team won four of its six matches at the annual NYU Duals – including a 14-13 thriller with 5th-ranked Northwestern that came down to the final bout – while the 5th-ranked Irish men split their six matches, with each lose coming to teams ranked among the nation’s top-six.

(Note: this recap not includes expanded bout notes and stat links).

A pair of Olympic hopefuls led the way for Notre Dame, as senior men’s sabeist Patrick Ghattas and freshman women’s epeeist Kelley Hurley each went 17-1. Sophomore women’s foilist Adrienne Nott added a 15-3 record during the six matches.

The Notre Dame women improved to 12-2 for the season, after posting wins over Yale (19-8), NYU (21-6), 6th-ranked St. John’s (16-11) and regional rival Northwestern (14-13). The nation’s 2nd-ranked women’s team, Columbia-Barnard, edged Notre Dame (15-12), as did 6th-ranked Ohio State in a 14-13 decision (reversing the score from last week’s Notre Dame Duals).

The Notre Dame men (11-4) turned in wins over Yale (22-5), NYU (21-6) and Stevens Tech (17-10) but lost to 4th-ranked Columbia (12-15), 6th-ranked St. John’s (18-9) and 2nd-ranked Ohio State (17-10).

Senior epeeist Amy Orlando delivered the winning touch versus Northwestern, twice battling back to tie the score before defeating Christa French in overtime (4-3) for the 14-13 team victory.

The tournament featured many of the nation’s top-rated individual fencers, with other bouts of note for the Irish including junior men’s foilist Jakub Jedrkowiak beating Columbia’s Scott Sugimoto (5-3), who placed third at the 2006 NCAAs.

Ghattas – who did not compete at last week’s ND Duals due to a World Cup conflict – swept his rivals from Ohio State (5-3 vs. Sergey Smirnov, 5-1 vs. Jason Paul and 5-4 vs. Mike Momstelidze), in addition to adding a pair of top wins over Columbia fencers (5-4 vs. Alex Krul and James Williams). The Notre Dame men held an 11-9 lead over Columbia but could not close out the win, as the Lions roared back for five straight wins to clinch the victory.

The Ohio State women clinched their win over Notre Dame in the 24th bout, providing a little less drama than last week’s showdown that was decided in the second-to-last bout (26th).

Other bouts of note for Notre Dame included junior epeeist Greg Howard’s 5-4 win over Yale’s Michael Pearce (the 5th-place finisher at the ’06 NCAAs) and Nott’s 4-3 bout with fellow All-American Katia Larchanka, clinching the win over St. John’s at 14-11.

The always spirited women’s foil bouts between Notre Dame and Northwestern saw the Wildcats All-America duo of Jessica Florendo and Sam Nemecek nearly sweep their Irish counterparts – aside from Nott’s key 5-2 win over Florendo early in the match.

In addition to the fencers mentioned above, others with top records at the NYU Duals included senior sabreist Valerie Providenza (12-4), Howard (11-6), sophomore epeeist Kim Montoya (11-6) and sophomore foilist Emilie Prot (11-7).

Additional details follow below:

ND women vs. Northwestern – A strong showing in epee (7-2) delivered the win for the Irish, with NU claiming the edge in foil (6-3) and sabre (5-4) … Orlando, Hurley and Providenza each went 3-0 to pace the win … Nemecek’s opening win over junior foilist Melanie Bautista helped Northwestern jump out to a 2-0 lead but the Irish won three straight, capped by Hurley’s 5-3 win over Christa French … Nott later added a key 4-3 win over Florendo and senior Amy Orlando followed with a 5-4 victory over the other French twin (Kayley) for a 5-3 Irish lead … Montoya added her own 5-4 win (over former NCAA qualifier Courtney Dubois) and Hurley shortly followed suit with a 5-4 win over Kayley French that pushed the ND lead to 8-5 … Orlando’s 5-2 win over DuBois later left the Irish cushion at 11-9 but Nemecek’s victory over Prot (5-1) forged an 11-11 tie and NU then surged ahead when Kayley French topped Montoya (5-2) and sabreist Sophie Eustis edged sophomore Ashley Serrette, 5-4 … the Irish needed to win the final three bouts and that’s exactly what happened, as Providenza defeated fellow NCAA veteran Mai Van Vu (5-1), Hurley knocked off DuBois (5-2) and Orlando delivered the clincher versus Christa French (4-3, in OT) … French had priority and would have been awarded the win if there was no touch in the 1:00 sudden-death … the bout-by-bout sequence is listed below.
