SUGAR GROVE, Ill. – After tying for 47th place on day one of the 2014 NCAA Sugar Grove (Ill.) Regionals with an eight-over par round, University of Notre Dame men’s golf senior Niall Platt shot a five-over par 77 during round two Friday to move up three spots into a tie for 44th place (+13) among 75 individuals.
Playing as one of five individual qualifiers on the par 72, 7,151-yard Rich Harvest Farms course, Platt recorded four birdies, four bogies and two double bogies on the day. The Santa Barbara, Calif., native shot -1 going out but +6 coming back in. He is tied for ninth in the regional with six birdies through two days. All four of his birdies Friday came in the first eight holes including two consecutive on holes one and two.
Playing against eight ranked teams and 17 ranked players, the No. 99 Platt is leading three foes ranked higher than him. An all-ACC selection this year, Platt will wrap up regionals play Saturday with the third round.
Entering the third and final day, UAB leads the field at +8 followed closely by Illinois (+9), Clemson (+15), California (+17) and Southern California (+18).
