Reaney Wins 400 IM To Highlight Day Two

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Notre Dame women’s swimming and diving squad put together seven top-five finishes to remain in fourth place following day two at the OSU Invitational in Columbus, Ohio.

Continuing to impress at the OSU Invitational was freshman Emma Reaney. Just a day after winning the 200 IM and resetting the school record to 1:57.67, the Lawrence, Kan., native again threatened a school mark on her way to winning the 400 IM in 4:12.19. The time is just .12 away from Katie Carroll’s 2007 mark. Reaney also took third in the 100 breast in 1:02.21. Both times are NCAA B-cut marks.

Elsewhere on day two, sophomore Kelly Ryan took second place in the 100 back with a NCAA B-cut time of 54.20. Junior diver Jenny Chiang finished second in the 3-meter dive with 310.35, while the 800 free relay team of Ryan, freshman Suzanne Bessire, Reaney and senior Amy Prestinario claimed third with a time of 7:21.79.

The Irish have 422 points entering the final day. The host Buckeyes continue to lead with 666 points.

Day three gets underway at 9 a.m. with the 200 back.

Event-by-Event Results

400 YARD IM – Finals
Reaney continued her stranglehold on the IM events at the OSU Invitational, taking the 400 IM title in a NCAA B-cut time of 4:12.19. The time was more than two seconds faster than her nearest competitor. She is now 8-0 on the year in IM events, including 4-0 this weekend, winning both the prelims and finals in both the 200 and 400. The time was just .17 off the school-record mark held by former Notre Dame great Katie Carroll, who swam 4:12.02 on March 8, 2007. She set the school record in the 200 last night with a blistering 1:57.67 in the finals of the 200 IM. Gracie Fredlake (13^th, 4:22.52) and Melissa Scott (14^th, 4:22.83) also scored points for the Irish.

400 YARD IM – Prelims
Reaney moved her record to 7-0 in IM events during her brief Irish career as she placed first in the 400 IM prelims with a NCAA B-cut time of 4:15.14. The Lawrence, Kan., product trailed for about half the race, before turning it on over the final 200 yards. Fellow freshmen M. Scott (12^th, 4:23.13) and Casey (17^th, 4:26.46) and Fredlake (4:24.15) also qualified for the finals on Saturday night.

100 YARD FLY – Finals
Leading the way for the Irish in the 100 fly were Prestinario, who finishing sixth in 55.42, and Sarah Dotzel, who placed seventh in 55.45. Also scoring for Notre Dame were Lauren Scott (13^th, 56.16) and M. Scott (15^th, 56.63).

100 YARD FLY – Prelims
Seven Irish swimmers qualified for the 100 fly finals, with Prestinario (6^th, 55.34) and Dotzel (7^th, 55.43) leading the way. Also qualifying were L. Scott (13^th, 56.17), M. Scott (14^th, 56.25), Casey (18^th, 57.08), Courtney Whyte (20^th, 57.09) and Emily Barton (22^nd, 57.26).

200 YARD FREE – Finals
Fresh off a fourth-place finish in the prelims in the morning session, Bessire took fifth in a time of 1:49.05. She was the top freshman finisher in the event. Prestinario also scored points for Notre Dame, placing 12^th in 1:51.16.

200 YARD FREE – Prelims
Bessire swam a strong 200 free prelim (1:49.49), to place fourth heading into the evening final. Prestinario (16^th, 1:51.75) and junior Jaime Malandra (18^th, 1:52.07) also qualified for the final.

100 YARD BREAST – Finals
After going 1:02.35 in the prelims to finish second, Reaney went lower in the finals of the 100 breast to claim third in a NCAA B-cut time of 1:02.21. Sophomore Christen McDonough took seventh in the A final in 1:03.27, while sophomore Lauren Stauder placed 10^th in 1:03.05. Stauder’s time was good for second in the B-final.

100 YARD BREAST – Prelims
Reaney continued her impressive weekend, placing second in the prelims of the 100 breast, touching the pad in a NCAA B-cut time of 1:02.35. Also qualifying for the finals were McDonough (7^th, 1:03.30) and Stauder (12^th, 1:04.32).

100 YARD BACK – Finals
After qualifying first in the morning session, Ryan took second in the 100 back in a NCAA B-cut time of 54.20. Kelly led the race from the beginning, only surrendering the lead after the final turn as Ohio State’s Kelsey Moran swam a blistering 13.40 to Ryan’s 13.93. Also scoring points for the Irish was Fredlake, who finished 14^th in 56.49.

100 YARD BACK – Prelims
Ryan broke the meet record and set a NCAA B-cut time in the 100 back, placing first in the prelims with a time of 53.60. The Hinsdale, Ill., native is 3-0 on the year in the event. Fredlake (10^th, 56.27), Whyte (18^th, 57.29) and Dotzel (19^th, 57.53) also qualified for the finals.

3-METER DIVE – Finals
Chiang placed second in the 3-meter dive, missing out on first by less than eight points. Chiang finished with 310.35. Freshman Allison Casareto took sixth with 265.35 points.

200 YARD MEDLEY RELAY – Finals
The Irish relay teams took fifth and seventh in the 200 medley relay. The team of Ryan, McDonough, Dotzel and Prestinario finished fifth in 1:42.75, while Whyte, Stauder, L. Scott and Hannah Bowen claimed seventh in 1:43.49.

800 FREE RELAY – Finals
The Irish touched the pad in third place in the 800 free relays, missing out on second by .77 seconds. The team of Ryan, Bessire, Reaney and Prestinario finished in 7:21.79. A second Notre Dame team composed of Erin Foley, Malandra, Barton and Bowen took eighth in 7:36.29.
