Records Fall At Alex Wilson Invitational On Saturday

NOTRE DAME, Ind. — The Fighting Irish men’s and women’s track team turned in a number of all-time performances on Saturday at the Alex Wilson Invitational in the Loftus Sports Center.

The most anticipated event of the day was the men’s distance medley relay, which was loaded with some of the top teams across the country. The race lived up to its billing, as the Irish team of Dylan Jacobs (1200), Edward Cheatham (400), Sam Voelz (800) and Yared Nuguse (1600) won the race in a photo finish with a time of 9:25.80, just .04 seconds ahead of Wisconsin.

Notre Dame’s time of 9:25.80 is not only the program, track and ACC record but also the second fastest time ever recorded in NCAA indoor track and field history for the event.

The other record-breaking performance came from an all too familiar source, as Rachel Tanczos broke her own program record in the weight throw for the fourth time this season with a distance of 23.31m, placing her first in the country in the event. The throw ranks Tanczos 11th in NCAA indoor track and field history for the event.

Teammate Abbey Kapitan also had a day to remember in the weight throw, setting a PR in the event with a throw of 22.23m to take second in the event. Even more impressive, Kapitan’s mark is now tied for fifth in the NCAA this season.

In the 60m hurdles, Madysen Hunter notched her first win of the season after crossing the line first with a time of 8.62.

Another notable performance was turned in by Logan Kusky in the men’s weight throw, finishing second in the event with a throw of 20.51m.

In total, Notre Dame turned in 37 top-10 performances during Alex Wilson Invitational.

The Irish host the ACC Indoor Championships at Loftus Sports Center next weekend, as competition begins on Thursday, Feb. 27 and conclude on Saturday, Feb. 29.
