Madison, Wis. – Rob Globke scored two goals; Mike Walsh added a third and goaltender David Brown made 30 saves as the Notre Dame Fighting Irish defeated the fourth-ranked Wisconsin Badgers by a 3-1 score at the Kohl Center.
The Irish win gives Notre Dame a win and a tie over the Badgers on the weekend and improves Notre Dame to 12-7-3 on the season. Wisconsin goes to 14-6-6 on the year. Notre Dame is now 3-0-1 in its last four games in Madison, Wis.
The Irish improve to 4-2-1 on the season in games versus nationally ranked teams with all seven of those games coming on the road.
Globke got the game-winning goal at 16:07 of the second period on a five-on-three power play and then added the insurance goal at 19:51 of the third period.
Notre Dame got off to a slow start in the first period, getting just two shots on freshman goaltender Brian Elliott who was making just his fifth career start for the Badgers.
Irish freshman David Brown stopped 12 of the 13 shots he faced in the opening stanza. The lone goal came off the stick of Rene Bourque who beat Brown with a backhander at 4:19 of the first for his eighth goal of the year.
Senior center John Eichelberger, who had two goals in Saturday’s game, set up the goal when he broke up a pass at the Irish blue line and slid the puck ahead to Bourque who came down the middle of the slot before breaking to the right, lifting the backhander over Brown’s glove.
Mike Walsh woke the Irish from their offensive slumber at 6:22 of the second period when he rifled a wrist shot past Elliot for his ninth goal of the campaign
With the Irish trapped in their zone, defenseman Tom Galvin flipped the puck to center ice where Walsh gathered it in at the Badger blue line and snapped his shot over Elliot’s glove to tie the game at 1-1.
Notre Dame then took advantage of three consecutive Wisconsin penalties that gave the Irish a five-on-three advantage for over a minute. Globke got the goal at 16:07 when he took a pass from Neil Komadoski at the bottom of the left wing circle. The senior right wing waited for Elliot to go down before beating him stick side for his 12th goal of the year.
That goal proved to be the game winner for Globke, giving him five on the year and 13 in his career to tie him for first with Brian Urick and Dave Poulin on the all-time game-winning goal list.
The third period saw Wisconsin almost tie the game with just four-and-a-half minutes left when Andrew Burish came out of the penalty box and raced in on Brown firing a wrister from the slot that beat the Irish goaltender, but hit the right post and came out.
Notre Dame’s penalty killers had an outstanding night as they shut the Badgers out on six power-play chances while going 1-for-3 themselves.
On the night, Wisconsin out shot Notre Dame 31-19. Elliot, who played the first two periods, made 12 saves and Bernd Bruckler had four stops in the third period.
Notre Dame returns to CCHA action for the final 12 games of the regular season. The Irish will travel to Northern Michigan on Jan. 23-24 for a two-game series with the Wildcats. Game time both nights is 7:05 p.m.
IRISH NOTES:
** Notre Dame’s two game series with the Badgers featured 14 players and coaches with ties to the U.S. National Team Developmental Program. The Irish had eight players who came through the program – seniors Rob Globke, Neil Komadoski and Brett Lebda, junior Derek Smith (out of the lineup due to injuries), sophomore Tim Wallace and freshmen Michael Bartlett, Noah Babin and Josh Sciba. Wisconsin has five players – sophomore Tom Sawatske and freshmen Jake Dowell, Robbie Earl, Jeff Likens and Ryan Suter while Badger head coach Mike Eaves was head coach of the program from 2000-02. Derek Smith, Tim Wallace and Noah Babin played for Eaves while they were with the program.
** Former Irish goaltender Forrest Karr is in his third year of law school at the University of Wisconsin. He is also an assistant coach for the Badger’s women’s hockey team. Karr helped spoil the opening of the Kohl Center on Oct. 3, 1998 with a 30-save performance as the Irish defeated the Badgers, 2-1, in the building’s opening night.
** The Irish have drawn two of the top 20 crowds to see the Badgers play at the Kohl Center. Saturday night’s crowd of 14, 242 is the seventh largest crowd in the history of the building. On Oct. 3, 1998, a crowd of 13,398 saw the Irish play Wisconsin. That’s the 19th largest crowd in the Kohl Center’s history.
