MADISON, Wis. — In the final meet of the regular season, the University of Notre Dame cross country programs got a better glimpse at the national landscape against a loaded field at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational at the Zimmer Championship Course, the site of next month’s NCAA Great Lakes Regional.
The 16th-ranked Irish women placed 12th in the 36-team field, which featured 20 ranked teams in a preview of the NCAA Championship. They finished ahead of eight other top-30 opponents and were the second-highest finishing team of participating ACC schools.
The No. 13 Irish men were the top ACC team in the field, finishing 15th ahead of conference rivals No. 10 NC State, No. 12 Syracuse and No. 16 Virginia, as well as three other ranked teams.
Graduate student Anna Rohrer led the Irish women with a 10th-place finish in 20:10.3 on the six-kilometer course, followed immediately by sophomore Maddy Denner in 11th at 20:11.0. While Rohrer fell off the lead pack in the final third of the race, Denner climbed 78 spots from the first checkpoint in one of her strongest races of the season. Rohrer and Denner led all ACC finishers among the stacked championship field.
Sophomore Jackie Gaughan was Notre Dame’s third finisher in 49th place, finishing in 20:46.1. Freshman Jocelyn Long came in at 117th (21:23.2), while junior Annasophia Keller rounded out the scorers for the Irish in 149th (21:39.5). The final Irish entrant, freshman Olivia Markezich, raced to a time of 21:57.2 to place 182nd.
In the men’s 8K race, junior Yared Nuguse placed 25th in 24:03.0 to lead the Irish and was the top ACC finisher for the second straight race. He was followed by junior Andrew Alexander (81st, 24:28.8), sophomore Dylan Jacobs (83rd, 24:29.2), graduate student Tony Williams (24:48.0) and sophomore Matthew Carmody (128th, 24:49.0). Sophomore Danny Kilrea (174th, 25:06.3) and senior Peter Monahan (225th, 26:23.6) rounded out the Notre Dame contingent.
