2022-23 Season (Freshman at Notre Dame):

• Transferred to Syracuse after the season’s completion.
• 2023 ACC All-Freshman Team
• 2023 ACC All-Academic Team
• Played in 28 games, with 24 starts, averaging 29.7 minutes for the Irish. Missed the last 4 games due to a left knee injury.
• He was the first McDonald’s All-American at Notre Dame since Demetrius Jackson arrived in 2013. In addition, he was the first McDonald’s All-American to start right away for Notre Dame since Torin Francis in 2002.
• Ranked 18th by ESPN and was the highest ranked ND recruit since at least 2007 (when ESPN recruiting database began). That spot was previously held by Demetrius Jackson, who was ranked No. 24 in 2013.
• 4th on the team in scoring with his 11.2 ppg. That number ranked 3rd amongst ACC freshmen, with the top two spots belonging to Duke’s Kyle Filipowski and Syracuse’s Judah Mintz.
• Scored nine of the team’s final 12 points of the first half vs Louisville (Jan. 28), finishing with 16 in the first. JJ totaled 22 points in the game – his 3rd 20-point effort of the year.
• Another stong second-half outing, this time at NC State on Jan. 24 – Scored 12 of his 18 points in the second. Rounded out the stat sheet with seven boards and three assists. Had the best plus/minus at +7.
• With five minutes left vs Georgia Tech on Jan. 10, Starling scored six of the team’s final 11 points to help force overtime and the eventual win. Starling finished with 16 points.
• Scored all 11 of his points in the 2nd half vs. Jacksonville on Jan. 27. Also grabbed a season-high 8 rebounds.
• Did what he could in the Florida State matchup on Dec. 21 – recording his second 20-point performance of the season. Starling went on a 6-0 run to end the game to pull the Irish within one, giving them an opportunity to win the game with six seconds left.
• Brought home the Michigan State win on Nov. 30, scoring nine of his 14 points in the second half.
• Took over the Bowling Green game on Nov. 22 – pouring in 23 points on a near-perfect 10-for-11 shooting night. He joined Torin Francis (10-11 vs Arizona on 3/27/2003) as the only other freshman in ND history to make at least 10 field goals while only missing one from the floor.
• 17-point breakout performance vs Youngstown State on Nov. 13. Starling went clutch mode, making back-to-back treys under the two-minute mark to help clinch the win.

• Rivals 4 Star – 40th overall, 8th point guard
• Competed in his first two years of prep basketball at Baker High School in Baldwinsville, New York, before transferring to La Lumiere School in northwest Indiana for his junior season
• Averaged 28.6 points, 6.2 rebounds and 1.8 assists in his final season at Baker High School
• Averaged 14.9 points per game at LaLumiere in 2020-21
• Named one of the top performers at the Wootten’s Top 150 camp in October of 2021
• Competes for City Rocks out of Albany, New York, on the AAU circuit, coached by Jim Hart and Cory Whalen
• The Circuit named him as a second-team selection at the Nike EYBL Session in the summer of 2021 after averaging 15.8 points, 2.2 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.0 steals per game
