Will move back to his natural position on defense after spending his freshman year at forward … looks to break into the regular rotation on defense in his sophomore year … worked hard to improve his overall skills in 2006-07 while not seeing any playing time … strong skater with excellent hockey instincts … very competitive on and off the ice … will push players in front of him for playing time as a sophomore … came to Notre Dame after spending three seasons in the United States Hockey League (USHL), playing two years with Sioux Falls (2003-05) and one in Chicago … one of six Notre Dame players to see action in the NAHL, having played for Compuware prior to moving to the USHL … joins senior Evan Rankin, junior Erik Condra, sophomores Brett Blatchford and Tom O[apos]Brien and freshman Ryan Guentzel as NAHL alums … one of 20 Notre Dame players to play in the USHL … one of three Western Pennsylvania natives on the Irish roster, joining junior Christian Hanson (Venetia) and sophomore Christiaan Minella (Canonsburg) … one of eight players from Pittsburgh area to play hockey at Notre Dame, joining Hanson, Minella, Mike Leherr (`86-90), Tom Mooney (`84-[apos]88), Tom Myers (`68-[apos]69), Tom Parent (`84-[apos]85) and John Roselli (`68-[apos]71) … was a teammate of Minella with the Pittsburgh Hornets junior hockey program … joins former Steel teammate Dan Kissel on the Irish roster … joined the Irish in the late-signing period (spring `06) along with Brett Blatchford, Dan Kissel and Tom O[apos]Brien.

PREP & PERSONAL: Graduated from Franklin High School in Livonia, Mich. … also attended Hempfield High School in his hometown and Davison High School in Davison, Mich., while playing for Compuware … played high school hockey as a freshman at Hempfield where he was the team[apos]s rookie-of-the-year … played at USA Hockey Select Festivals as a 14, 15,16 and 17-year old … was most valuable player of his team at Select-16 festival … drafted in 2001 in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Draft by the Mississauga Ice Dogs …. started his junior hockey career with the NAHL[apos]s Compuware team in `02-[apos]03 where he was a teammate of former Irish standout Jason Paige `07 … in two seasons at Sioux Falls (`03-[apos]05), played in 109 games, scoring three goals with 14 assists for 17 points … while with Sioux Falls won the Stampede[apos]s community service award … spent the `05-[apos]06 campaign with the Chicago Steel and led all Steel defensemen in scoring with seven goals and 17 assists for 24 points, good for 10th among USHL defensemen … from a Notre Dame family as his father, Jim, is a 1972 graduate and his sister, Megan, graduated in 2006 … full name is Stewart James Carlin … son of Jim and Suzanne Carlin … has one sister … born July 12, 1985 in West Palm Beach, Fla. … finance major in the Mendoza College of Business.
