Rowing Recognized With NCAA Public Recognition Award

Sept. 8, 2010

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The University of Notre Dame women’s rowing team was one of more than 800 Division I sports recognized in 2009-10 by the NCAA for its exceptional work in the classroom as part of the NCAA’s academic performance program.

Based on the most recent multi-year Academic Progress Rates, the Irish rowing team was among 841 teams that earned NCAA Public Recognition Awards. The citations are given annually to teams registering an APR score within the top 10 percent of their sport.

Notre Dame had a perfect 1,000 for its multi-year APR scores based on the numbers that represent the combination of scores from 2005-06, 2006-07, 2007-08 and 2008-09.

The APR provides a real-time look at a team’s academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete. The APR includes both retention and academic eligibility at an institution in its calculation, which provides a clear picture of the academic culture in each sport.

The Irish rowing team was among 18 schools to be cited for a Public Recognition Award. In addition to Notre Dame the other schools were Bucknell University, Dartmouth College, George Washington University, Iona College, La Salle University, Lehigh University, Loyola University (Maryland), Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Northeastern University, Sacred Heart University, Saint Joseph’s University, Santa Clara University, University of California, Berkeley, University of Dayton and Yale University.

“It is a great honor for the program to be recognized for our commitment to education and the graduation of our student-athletes, ” Irish head coach Martin Stone says. “This demonstrates Notre Dame’s ability to be able to compete on a national stage in athletics and also to receive a first-rate education at the same time.”
