Notre Dame senior forward Russell Carter (Paulsboro, N.J.) has been named the BIG EAST Conference men’s basketball player of the week, after leading the Irish to a 99-85 win over fourth-ranked Alabama on Dec. 7. Carter’s career-high 27 points in the win over the Crimson Tide included 6-of-11 shooting from 3-point range, with Carter adding five rebounds and five steals in Notre Dame’s only game of the week. Carter is averaging a team-best 16.6 points and has reached double-figure scoring in every game this season.
Notre Dame sophomore guard Kyle McAlarney also was honored by the BIG EAST, earning a spot on the conference’s weekly honor roll in recognition of his 20 points on 7-of-9 shooting in the win over Alabama. It marks the second straight week that the Irish have placed a player on the honor roll, as junior forward Rob Kurz was recognized after averaging 19.6 points (16-of-22 shooting) and 7.7 rebounds in wins over Lehigh (93-87), Winston-Salem State (90-45) and Maryland (81-74). Earlier this season, freshman forward Luke Harangody was named BIG EAST rookie of the week after averaging 16.3 points and 6.0 rebounds in leading Notre Dame to a 3-1 record to start the season.
