ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Junior Eric Schnurrenberger went 2-0 in singles and 2-0 in doubles Saturday at the USTA/ITA Midwest Regionals to highlight a spectacular day for the University of Notre Dame men’s tennis team at the elite tournament.
Schnurrenberger, who is in the quarterfinals in both draws, helped lead an Irish group that went an impressive 10-4 on the day.
“Eric has played very well the last two days,” said head coach Ryan Sachire. “All three of his matches were high quality wins, and he is hoping to continue to build and improve each match throughout the rest of the tournament.”
While Schnurrenberger is the lone Notre Dame player remaining in the singles draw and will meet No. 6 Jared Hiltzik of Illinois Sunday, the Zug, Switzerland native is joined by several of his teammates in the doubles bracket.
Schnurrenberger and his teammate Drew Dawson will look to advance to the semifinals Sunday when they meet Jeffrey Schorsch and Charlie Emhardt. Elsewhere, the sophomore pair of Eddy Covalschi and Josh Hagar will meet Alex Patrone and Runhao Hua and the No. 27 team of Billy Pecor and Alex Lawson will battle DePaul’s Kyle Johnson and Sten Leusink.
Not just a solid doubles team, Hagar and Covalschi both advanced to the round of 16 in singles action, before falling Alex Patrone and John Patrick Mallone, respectively. Earlier in the day, Lawson lost a close three-set contest to Hiltzik, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2.
