PEACHTREE CITY, Ga. – Senior tri-captain Matthew Scott (Oakton, Va./International School of Paris) won a three-set battle with Duke’s Jonathan Stokke to advance to the semifinals of the adidas Invitational. Scott won the first set 7-5, dropped the second 4-6, but held on to win the third 7-6, wining the tiebreaker (7-5). Earlier in the day, Scott topped 63rd-ranked Fabrizio Stestini of TCU 6-2, 6-2. Scott is now 3-0 versus ranked opponents this season.
Notre Dame assistant coach Todd Doebler said, “Matt has made a strong showing in the tournament and will face a tough opponent in TCU’s Rafael Abreu in tomorrow’s semifinal.”
In the round of 16, senior tri-captain and 64th-ranked Luis Haddock (Caguas, P.R./Notre Dame H.S.) defeated Duke’s Ryan Heinberg 6-4, 6-1, before falling in the quarterfinals to Rafael Abreu of TCU in three sets, 3-6, 7-6, 7-6.
Freshman Barry King (Dublin, Ireland/Gonzaga College) continues to do well in his first college tournament, picking up two wins in the consolation bracket. King topped Mark Weinig of Wisconsin 6-2, 6-1, in the third round before upending TCU’s Daniel Scholten 6-4, 6-4, in the quarterfinals.
Today’s doubles matches were not played due to rain, Scott and Haddock will play in the quaterfinals tomorrow.
