NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Two-time cross country All-American Patrick Smyth has been named the 2008 Great Lakes Region Men’s Athlete of the Year, the USTFCCCA announced Thursday.
The Salt Lake City, Utah native won his second straight regional title and led the Irish men to a fourth-place finish Nov. 15. He was second at the BIG EAST Conference meet, helping Notre Dame to a runner-up finish.
Smyth finished fourth at the Pre-NCAA meet on Oct. 18 and was fifth at the Notre Dame Invitational Oct. 3.
Smyth earned his second cross country All-America honor at last year’s NCAA Championships with a 15th-place finish.
Smyth will lead the Irish again this year as they compete at the national meet Nov. 24.
