AS A JUNIOR: Turned in a 34-18 record during the regular season before finishing seventh at both the Midwest Fencing Conference and Midwest Regional tournaments … his 8-4 record at the Northwestern Duals included wins over UCSD[apos]s Cameron Sprowles (5-3), Stanford[apos]s Richard Fulton (5-4) and Fullerton[apos]s Alex Decker (5-2) … went 6-9 versus a talented field at the NYU Duals, with top wins over Sam Wunderlich of St. John[apos]s (5-3) and Yale[apos]s Cory Werk (5-4), the 2004 NCAA runner-up … added a 10-2 record at the ND Duals (5-1 win over Duke[apos]s Jackson McClam) before closing regular season with a 10-3 mark at the UC San Diego Duals (5-1 win over UCSD[apos]s John Chung) … lost to Ohio State[apos]s Andras Horanyi in the MFC quarterfinals (12-15) … beat OSU[apos]s Will Jeter in 7th-place bout (15-3) at Regional, in Cleveland … placed 19th at the Penn State Open in the fall of [apos]05.

AS A SOPHOMORE: Narrowly missed out on spot in the 2005 NCAAs after ending the regular season with a 41-17 record and adding a 5th-place finish at the Midwest Regional (at Wayne State) … served as an alternate at the NCAAs while cheering the Irish on to their historic victory … responded after a slow start (5-7 at the NYU Duals) by winning 36 of his final 46 bouts … went 26-8 at the two-day ND Duals … enjoyed 5-4 victories at the home bouts over Fullerton[apos]s Decker and OSU[apos]s Jeter (repeating an earlier 5-4 victory at the NYU Duals) … ended [apos]05 regular season with a 10-2 mark at the Duke Duals (highlighted by 5-2 win against Nick Marchuk of Johns Hopkins and 5-4 victory over Duke[apos]s McClam) … edged teammate Jedrkowiak (15-13) to win the MFC individual foil title … his key wins at the Regional included a 5-2 victory over Cleveland State[apos]s Mike Merker and a 5-3 win over OSU[apos]s Richard Spicer … placed 14th at the Penn State Open in the fall of [apos]04 (9-6) and opened 2005 by competing in the North American Cup held in Overland Park, Kan. … also was one of several Notre Dame fencers to compete in the 2005 Summer Nationals (held in Sacramento, Calif.).

AS A FRESHMAN: Made late surge (MFC runner-up, third at Regional) before competing in 2004 NCAAs … went 44-16 in regular season … his 8-0 mark at the Northwestern Duals included 5-3 win over Bryan Bishe (Johns Hopkins) … his 5-4 bout vs. Ian Schlaepfer (also 5-2 over Joseph Brown) helped Irish win 14-13 at Penn State … went 6-9 at NYU Duals, 17-6 at the ND Duals (5-0 win over OSU[apos]s Nathan Weir helped Irish men win 15-12) and 11-0 in West-Central Duals (at Purdue) … beat teammate Forest Walton (15-9) and OSU[apos]s Alexander Law (15-10) in MFC quarters and semifinals before dropping 5-15 final to OSU[apos]s Ellis (the eventual NCAA champ) … entered Regional as fifth seed but used wins over Walton (5-1) and Law (5-2) to finish third (7-3) … stepped in for teammate Derek Snyder (hand injury) at NCAAs and placed 20th (7-16), with top wins over Walton (5-4), Stanford[apos]s Florian Reichling (5-2) and Fullerton[apos]s Roland Breden (5-1) … reached quarterfinals at Penn State Open in the fall of [apos]03 (15-11 vs. Walton).

PREP & PERSONAL: Three-year fencing captain at Central Catholic High School, coached by Charles Murphy … earned three league/regional titles and state foil titles as a sophomore and junior (he did not compete in the state meet as a senior) … placed 10th at a 2002 national tournament (d-2 level) … trained under Iana Dakova at Three Rivers Fencing Center … member of the National Honor Society … father Frank Bontempo is a 1972 Notre Dame graduate … son of Jan Johnston and Frank Bontempo … full name is Franklin Anthony Bontempo … born July 19, 1984, in Pittsburgh … a pre-professional science major, enrolled in the College of Science.
