Two-time monogram winner for the Irish β¦ steady, hard-working midfielder who came into her own as a sophomore in 2006 β¦ continues to improve all aspects of her game β¦ will look to get more involved in the offensive attack in 2007 β¦ outstanding all-around athlete who has the ability to run all day β¦ has shown good instincts in the midfield β¦ understands the tactics of the game β¦ the sky is the limit with her talent and ability β¦ has impressed the coaching staff with her tremendous work ethic β¦ will take a regular role in the Irish midfield this season β¦ a ground ball machine β¦ outstanding student who excels in the classroom β¦ a Dean[apos]s List selection in each of her first five semesters at Notre Dame β¦ selected second team all-BIG EAST and IWLCA all-West/Midwest region as a sophomore β¦ has played in 34 games, making 18 starts with 18 goals and 13 assists for 31 points β¦ has 61 ground balls, 37 draw controls and 29 caused turnovers in two seasons for the Irish.
AS A SOPHOMORE: Played in all 19 games, making 18 starts β¦ scored 12 goals with 10 assists for 22 points, all career highs β¦ led the Irish with 51 ground balls (sixth-best single season total) β¦ tied for third with 30 draw controls and was second with 23 caused turnovers (tied for ninth-best single-season total) β¦ selected second team all-BIG EAST and second team IWLCA all-West/Midwest region β¦ had six games with two or more points on the season and two games with two or more goals β¦ opened the season with two assists and four draw controls in win at California β¦ scored one goal with four ground balls, three draw controls and three caused turnovers at Stanford β¦ added a goal (GWG) in 18-6 win over Ohio with four ground balls, three draw controls and two caused turnovers β¦ scored a career-best three goals and four points in 17-15 win over Cornell with four more ground balls β¦ went two games without a point before getting a goal and an assist in 13-9 win at Loyola β¦ scored a goal and had two assists for three points in win over Canisius β¦ scored one goal in 13-9 win at Connecticut β¦ had two goals and a career-high seven ground balls in win at Ohio State β¦ recorded assists in back-to-back one-goal losses at Duke and at Georgetown β¦ had one goal and a career-high five draw controls in win at Rutgers β¦ did not score in last two regular seasons games but had one goal and two assists in three NCAA tournament games β¦ had five ground balls and four draw controls in the NCAA tourney.
AS A FRESHMAN: Played in all 15 games in 2005 β¦ scored six goals on 11 shots (.545 shooting percentage) β¦ added three assists for nine points β¦ grabbed 10 ground balls, had seven draw controls and caused six turnovers β¦ scored first two goals of her career in 10-9 loss at Vanderbilt β¦ recorded two assists in 18-8 win over California β¦ had one goal in 13-10 loss to Connecticut β¦ ended the year with a three-game point streak (3g, 1a) β¦ had a two-goal game at Johns Hopkins.
PREP AND PERSONAL: Three-sport standout at Our Lady of Mercy High School in Rochester, N.Y. β¦ lettered four years in soccer, four years in basketball and six years in lacrosse (played in seventh and eighth grades) β¦ served as team captain for all three teams as a senior β¦ three-year captain of lacrosse team β¦ five-time team MVP and leading scorer (2000-04) β¦ set school record for goals scored (375) to finish second all-time in New York state history and first all-time in New York Section V β¦ recorded 683 ground balls in her career (school record) β¦ member of New York state regional lacrosse team (2003) β¦ participated in U.S. Lacrosse national tournament β¦ four-time all-conference and all-city in soccer β¦ selected team MVP and Independent League player of the year in fall of 2003 β¦ was fourth team all-New York State in 2002 and first team in 2003 β¦ member of gold-medal-winning New York Empire State Games Team β¦ helped Our Lady of Mercy to Section V championship in 2001 and runner-up finishes in 2000 and 2002 β¦ all-city selection in basketball as a senior β¦ led team in scoring in 2003 (10.3 ppg) and 2004 (13.3 ppg) β¦ selected Rochester High School Female Athlete of the Year in 2003 and WHAM high school Sportswoman of the Year β¦ class valedictorian β¦ winner of NYSPHSAA Scholar-Athlete Award in 2002 and 2003 β¦ full name is Mary Bethany Carpenter β¦ daughter of Bill and Chrissy Carpenter β¦ father played football and golf at Dartmouth College β¦ grandfather also played football at Dartmouth β¦ has two brothers and two sisters β¦ sister, Lisa, is a 2005 graduate of Notre Dame β¦ born Nov. 8, 1985, in Pennington, N.J. β¦ psychology and arts and letters pre-professional major at Notre Dame.
