Benton Harbor, Mich. – Three members of the Notre Dame men’s golf team – junior Gavin Ferlic (South Bend, Ind.) and sophomores Steve Colnitis (Baldwin, Md.) and Ryan Marshall (Marco Island, Fla.) – participated in this week’s 100th Western Amateur golf tournament played at the par-71, Point O’ Woods Country Club in Benton Harbor, Mich. All three golfers missed the cut.
Colnitis finished with a 36-hole total of 155 after rounds of 76 and 79. The sophomore got off to a slow start in Wednesday’s opening round shooting a 41 for his first nine holes (playing the back nine) before closing with a 35 on the front nine for his 76.
Ferlic was five strokes behind Colnitis with a 161 total after shooting a 77 on Wednesday before falling to an 84 in Thursday’s round.
Marshall shot an 81 in opening round play and withdrew prior to Thursday’s round.
The 156-man field was cut to the top 54 golfers for the final 36 holes which will be played on Friday, Aug., 3rd. The top 16 remaining golfers then go to match play on the weekend. The leaders after 36-holes were Kevin Stadler of Englewood, Colo. and Andrew Buckle of Queensland, Australia. The duo were tied for the lead with nine-under par 133.
