NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The University of Notre Dame men’s and women’s track and field is set to play host to the Alex Wilson Invitational Friday at 5:00 p.m. (ET) at the Loftus Sports Center in Notre Dame, Ind. The two-day meet serves as one of the designated “last chance” meets in the country. The event gives student-athletes a final opportunity to qualify for the 2011 NCAA Indoor Championships next weekend in College Station, Texas.

The meet commences Friday with the women’s weight throw at 5:00 p.m. (ET).

The signature event of the meet is the Alex Wilson 800, which will begin at 12:50 p.m. (ET) Saturday. The half mile race is named in honor of Alex Wilson, a former three-time All-American runner at Notre Dame, who later coached the Irish from 1950-72. During his tenure, Wilson lead the 1957 cross country team to the NCAA championship.

During his running career, Wilson was undefeated in the quarter-mile and half-mile race, and won two Olympic medals (silver in the 800 meters, bronze in the 400 meters) for Canada at the 1932 Games in Los Angeles. Additionally, he was inducted into the Canadian Track Hall of Fame in 1954 and the Helms Athletic Foundation Hall of Fame in 1967, and was also named the NCAA Cross Country Coaches Association National Coach of the Year in 1972.

The women’s and men’s distance medley relay will be another feature event for the meet. The women’s race is set for Friday at 7:45 p.m., followed by the men’s race at 8:00 p.m. that will conclude the first day of the two-day event.

Admission for the Notre Dame Invitational, and all Irish home track and field meets, is free to the general public. For updates during the meet, follow notredamexctf on twitter. Complete results from the Notre Dame Invitational will be available upon conclusion of the day’s events at und.com.
