Weiss Tosses Two-Hitter In 5-1 Irish Win Over Boston College

Irish win 40th game all-time against Boston College Friday

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The University of Notre Dame softball team (21-27, 9-13 ACC) secured the series opening win Friday night at Melissa Cook Stadium, taking down Boston College 5-1 behind a complete game masterpiece from sophomore Brianne Weiss. Tonight marked the 40th win in program history over Boston College.

Weiss allowed just two hits in those seven complete innings, striking out seven Eagles on her way to her 10th win of the season. In 11 innings this week, the southpaw has tallied 15 strikeouts and leads the team with 110 on the year.

The Notre Dame bats continued to stay hot, as five Irish logged multi-hit games, including a career-best three-hit performance from freshman Lily Hagan. The Irish designated player is hitting .385 in conference play this season with 11 RBI in just 39 at bats against ACC foes.

The Irish have tallied double-digit hits in the three of the last four games and hit .421 tonight with runners on. Four of the five Notre Dame runs were scored with two outs.

With the game tied at one in the fourth, senior Mickey Winchell lined a ball into the right center field gap, sprinting all the way to third for her second three-bagger of the season, while also driving the game-winning run. The center fielder scored two runs on the night, pushing her total to 31 on the season.

The Irish will look to continue the momentum tomorrow against Boston College at 1:00 p.m. ET inside Melissa Cook Stadium. Notre Dame’s four seniors (Paige Cowley, Micaela Kastor, Ashley Marietta and Mickey Winchell) will all be honored prior to the game for senior day ceremonies.
