NOTRE DAME, Ind. — Teresa Borton, a highly ranked high school post player from Yakima, Wash., has signed a national letter of intent to attend the University of Notre Dame in 2001, head coach Muffet McGraw announced Wednesday. Borton, a senior at West Valley High School, becomes the sixth member of the Irish women’s basketball class of 2005, joining Jacqueline Batteast, Allison Bustamante, Katy Flecky, Jill Krause and Kelsey Wicks, who signed letters of intent on Nov. 8.

“We’re elated and so excited that Teresa chose to attend Notre Dame,” says McGraw, who recently signed a five-year contract to continue as coach of the Irish through the 2004-05 season. “Teresa rounds out a great class and give us one of the top three classes in the country. This is the best class that we’ve ever signed and its shows that we are moving in the right direction.”

Borton, the 2000 Seattle Times player of the year, has been rated 23rd by Blue Star Basketball and is the third highest-rated senior at 6-3 or taller. She earned sixth-team high school All-America honors by Street & Smith. She was named first-team all-state by the Associated Press as a junior and led the state in rebounding as a sophomore and was fourth as a junior. Borton scored 33 points, had 12 rebounds and blocked three shots to lead West Valley to a win over the No. 1 team in the state tournament last year.

“Teresa is a post player with great mobility who can score around the basket,” says McGraw. “She has a lot of offensive skills and is a good defender as well so I think she is going to fit right in our scheme of things.”
