Women's Golf In Second After The First Day Of The Mary Fossum Invitational

EAST LANSING, Ind. – The University of Notre Dame women’s golf team posted a score of 593 (17-over par) on the opening day at the 27th annual Mary Fossum Invitational. The squad carded a 298 in the first 18 holes and a 295 in the final round of the day. Freshman Nicole Zhang (Calgary, Alberta/ Bishop Carroll) leads the Irish and the tournament after registering a 136 (8-under par).

The team finished the day only two strokes behind Kent State (591). Reigning champions to the contest, Michigan State (595) finished in third placed, followed by Iowa State (601) in fourth.

Zhang had an impressive collegiate premier showing consistency as she carded par on 22 holes in the two rounds. The newcomer posted a total of 11 birdies on the day placing her in first-place going into the final round.

Senior So-Hyun Park (Seoul, South Korea/Bradenton Prep.) and junior Becca Huffer (Denver, Colo./Littleton) join Zhang among the top of the Irish leader board. Park posted a 75 (3-over par) in both rounds of play on the day. Huffer carded a 153 (9-over par) at the end of the 36 holes.

Freshman Kristina Nhim (Cypress, Calif./Cypress) and senior Katie Conway (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) rounded out the Irish’s scoring rounds in the opening 18 holes. Nhim recorded 154 (10-over par) and Conway finished at 160 (16-over par) on the day.

Competing individually is Katie Allare (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier Prep.). The junior is currently tied for 14th place after carding a 154 (10-over par) on the day.
