NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Notre Dame women’s lacrosse team exploded for seven goals in an eight-minute span late in the first half and shut out Davidson in the second half on its way to an 18-2 win over the Wildcats on Friday in the first women’s lacrosse night game at Moose Krause Stadium. Nine different players scored for the Irish, including eight in the first half. Senior captain Kerry Callahan scored four goals and dished off four assists as the Irish improve to 7-2 with the win. Davidson falls to 5-8 with the loss. Notre Dame returns to action at home on Sun., April 11, in a 1:00 p.m. game against Denver.
Notre Dame scored three goals in the first nine minutes of the game to build a 3-0 lead on goals by Callahan, Lael O’Shaughnessy and Maura Doyle. Davidson netted its first goal of the game when Rachel Bowen scored at 15:36 to cut the lead to 3-1. The Irish struck right back 36 seconds later when Kathryn Perrella converted a pass from Courtney Calabrese for a 4-1 lead.
Notre Dame’s offense then went on a tear, scoring seven goals from in a span of 7:39 to build a 11-1 lead with 4:36 remaining in the first half. The top two Irish scorers accounted for five of the seven goals. Callahan netted a goal and had two assists, while O’Shaughnessy scored and had an assist. Davidson stopped the scoring spree with the final goal of the half in what would be its final goal of the game when Amanda Fleck scored with 2:04 before halftime to cut Notre Dame’s lead to 11-2.
The second half saw the Irish shut out an opponent in a half for the first time in its three-year history and end the game with a 16-goal margin of victory, also the largest in Notre Dame women’s lacrosse history. The Irish defense limited Davidson’s scoring chances in the second half and gave Notre Dame offensive contributions throughout the game. Freshman Kathryn Lam scored her first career in the first half, while Sarah LeSueur recorded her first point of the season when she assisted on the second of Katherine Scarola’s two goals in the second half.
