CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Notre Dame women’s lacrosse team broke open a 4-3 halftime game with nine second-half goals to beat Columbia 13-5 in the final game of the season for the Irish on Sat., April 24, in Cambridge, Mass. Freshman Kathryn Lam scored a season-high four goals and had an assist all in the second half to lead Notre Dame, which finished its third season of varsity women’s lacrosse with a 9-6 record.
Senior Kerry Callahan scored twice to finish her career with a 29-game goal-scoring streak. She scored in 36 of the 37 varsity Notre Dame women’s lacrosse games in her career. Sophomore Lael O’Shaughnessy scored three goals to conclude the season with 50 goals, the most in the three-year history of Notre Dame women’s lacrosse. O’Shaughnessy also had 19 assists this season for a program-record 69 points, while Callahan was right behind with 35 goals and 32 assists for 67 points.
The Irish and Lions exchanged goals through most of the first half with Notre Dame ahead 3-2 with 8:17 in the first half. Freshman Alissa Moser scored her second goal of the first half at 3:18 to give the Irish a 4-2 lead before Devin Fitzpatrick scored her second goal of the half at 0:30 to pull Columbia within 4-3 at halftime.
Lam opened the scoring in the second half with the first of her four goals at 26:09 but Fitzpatrick scored again at 22:50 for a 5-4 Irish lead. Sophomore Courtney Calabrese gave Notre Dame a 6-4 advantage just 24 seconds later. After the teams traded goals by Lam and Columbia’s Kristin Santora at 13:14 and 12:04 for a 7-5 Notre Dame lead, the Irish erupted for six goals and held the Lions scoreless in the final 11:37 of the game.
Callahan netted her second goal of at game at 11:37 to begin the scoring spree. Calabrese, Lam, and O’Shaughnessy each scored in a span of 1:28 as the Irish led 11-5 with 5:45. O’Shaughnessy and Lam added goals in the final minute for the 13-5 final score.
