NOTRE DAME, Ind. – For the second time this season, Notre Dame freshman guard Jackie Young has been named the ACC’s Rookie of the Week in women’s basketball. The Princeton, Indiana native once again earned the accolade on Monday after helping guide the No. 7 Irish to conference victories this past week over No. 12 Louisville and Georgia Tech.
On ESPN2’s “Big Monday,” Young scored 16 points while snaring seven rebounds as the Irish picked up a crucial, 85-66, win against Louisville in ACC play. The 16 points were Young’s best showing of the season in an ACC game and her second-best scoring output of the season overall, trailing just her 20-point day against Valparaiso on Dec. 4. Young would be Notre Dame’s second-leading scorer in the win over the Cardinals (Arike Ogunbowale scored 22) while the seven rebounds were one off of her career high.
Young would set a career high with her five assists while not committing a turnover in Sunday’s 90-66 win over Georgia Tech. Young also tied her career high as she grabbed eight rebounds against the Yellow Jackets.
She had previously received the elite league’s weekly rookie accolade on Dec. 5 after her 20-point showing against Valparaiso and making significant contributions to Notre Dame’s Nov. 30 road win at Iowa in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.
The Irish (23-3, 11-1 ACC) will be back in action this week with a pair of road games, competing Thursday night at Clemson and Sunday afternoon at No. 21 Syracuse. The contest from the Carrier Dome will be broadcast live nationally on ESPN2 at 5 p.m.
