Tony Rack 2026-27 Men's Basketball Staff
Assistant Coach
Coach Shrewsberry welcomed Tony Rack to the staff as Assistant Coach in June of 2026. Rack joins the Irish following a highly successful five-year stint at Winthrop, where he served as Associate Head Coach in his last season.
“We are excited to welcome Tony to Notre Dame. Tony has been part of a winning program at Winthrop, helping them achieve back-to-back 20-win seasons, and he brings a tremendous amount of energy, passion, and experience to our staff. He has a great ability to connect with players, build meaningful relationships, and create an environment that challenges them to improve every day. His work ethic, attention to detail, and commitment to player development align with what we value at Notre Dame.” Coach Shrewsberry explained.
Winthrop produced a 101-63 record during Rack’s five-year stint in Rock Hill, South Carolina, which included three Big South Championship game appearances (2022, 2025, 2026). The Cincinnati, Ohio, native was promoted to Associate Head Coach prior to the 2024-25 season.
Also important to note, Rack helped develop Winthrop transfer and current Irish product Logan Duncomb, who ultimately impressed with his 2026 Big South Player of the Year season.
Prior to Winthrop, Rack was an assistant coach at Western Carolina for three seasons. Rack and the rest of the Catamount staff produced a tremendous turnaround from 2019 to 2020, improving from seven to 19 wins, culminating in a SoCon Tournament semifinal appearance. Rack assisted in the recruitment and development of two First Team All-SoCon players and first at Western Carolina since the 2014-15 season.
Backtracking more, Coach Rack spent three years as the director of operations at Northern Kentucky. There, he contributed to one of the nation’s largest turnarounds, going from nine wins to an NCAA Division I era record 24 victories the following year. The Norse earned their first-ever berth into the NCAA Tournament in 2017 after claiming the Horizon League Tournament crown. The year after, Northern Kentucky captured the Horizon League regular-season title on their way to a second consecutive 20-win season.
Also, during his tenure at NKU, he was named a 2018 Under Armour 30-under-30 award winner.
Rack’s coaching career began as a graduate assistant at Winthrop in 2012. He spent three years with the Eagles, compiling 53 wins and two Big South Conference championship game appearances.
Prior, Rack had a four-year playing career at Northern Kentucky, earning his degree in 2012. Rack graduated as one of the program’s most prolific shooters, ranking third all-time in three-point field goal percent and ninth in three-pointers made. He led the Norse in three-point shooting percentage for three consecutive seasons.
