ATLANTA, Ga. – Fourteen members of the Notre Dame fencing team recently wrapped up competition at the U.S. Summer Championships at the Georgia World Congress Center. Junior Courtney Hurley (San Antonio, Texas) and sophomore Lian Osier (Battle Ground, Wash.) each captured a title at the tournament, while junior Reggie Bentley (Little Rock, Ark.) earned a third-place result in the men’s foil open division.
Hurley advanced to the semifinals in the women’s epee open division with relative ease with victories of 15-6, 15-8 and 15-8 in her first three bouts, respectively. After being tested by Lindsay Campbell in the semis (15-13), Hurley rolled to the title over Susannah Scalan 15-7. This title adds to what has already been a busy year for Hurley, as she captured four Junior World Cup gold medals in epee (Montreal, Helsinki, Germany, Budapest) along with winning bronze at the 2010 NCAA Championships.
Osier, a gold medalist earlier in the year at an event in the 2009-10 North American Cup fencing series, turned in a pair of strong performances as she captured the title in the U-19 division of the women’s sabre before placing in a tie for third in the open division. She claimed the U-19 crown after pulling out a 15-13 decision over Margaret McDonald and reached the semis of the open division before dropping a hard-fought bout to Emily Jacobson, the eventual champion, 15-12.
After posting a 33-8 foil record in his sophomore season, Bentley continued to show his improvements with his third-place finish in the men’s foil open division tournament. The rising junior earned the 20th seed heading into elimination play and reached the quarterfinals before being knocked out by eventual champion Alexander Massialas, 15-8.
