Irish 18th After Second Round Of Tar Heel Invitational

Oct. 8, 2011

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The University of Notre Dame women’s golf team sits in 18th place after the second round of the Tar Heel Invitational, played Saturday at the UNC Finley Golf Course. Individually, Becca Huffer (Denver, Colo.) jumped into a tie for 43rd with a two-day total of 149 (+5).

LSU moved into a tie for the team lead with Alabama after Saturday’s action as both teams hold seven under par scores (569). The host North Carolina holds down third place at even par (576). Alabama’s Hannah Collier used a second round 66 (-6) to move into first place individually at nine under (135), while Michigan State’s Caroline Powers (137, -7) and LSU’s Madelene Sagstrom (138, -6) are second and third, respectively.

For Huffer, her second round featured a tale of two nines. After starting her round with a four over back nine (40), the Irish senior rebounded to conclude the front nine at two under (34) aided by birdies on the third and fourth holes.

Ashley Armstrong (Flossmoor, Ill.) rebounded nicely on day two for the Irish to match Huffer with the low round of the day amongst Notre Dame golfers (74, +2). After a day filled with non-par scores on Friday, the freshman played consistent golf on Saturday, registering 12 pars to go along with two birdies and four bogeys. Armstrong is tied for 66th at 152 (+8).

Kelli Oride (Lihue, Hawaii) saw one hole define her second round as she quadruple bogeyed the par-3, 14th hole. Despite that one blemish, Oride played the remaining 17 holes at two over, carding two birdies, four bogeys and 11 pars. She is third among the Irish rotation and tied for 82nd overall at 155 (+11).

Sophomore Kristina Nhim (Cypress, Calif.) and senior Katie Allare (Phoenix, Ariz.) round out the Irish rotation, sitting with scores of 156 (+12) and 164 (+20), respectively, after 36 holes of play. Nhim is 87th overall, while Allare is 94th.

The third and final round of play kicks off at 9:15 a.m. (ET) with a shotgun start that sees the Irish teeing off on holes 15 through 18. Be sure to check back with und.com Sunday for final round results for the Irish.
