NOTRE DAME, Ind. — The University of Notre Dame track & field program completed regular season indoor competition Saturday at the Alex Wilson Invitational inside the Loftus Sports Center, a meet highlighted by an elite distance medley relay field.
The women’s distance medley produced six of the nation’s top 12 times based on marks entering the day, with Baylor taking the top spot at the meet and second in the country with an Alex Wilson record of 10:58.52. The Irish grouping of Jessica Harris, Margaret Bamgbose, Samantha Murray and Danielle Aragon, placed third in the race to etch the nation’s fourth-best time in 11:01.59.
The top 12 national times qualify for the NCAA Championships.
“The main purpose was for our elite kids to bolster their position on the national list,” head coach Alan Turner said. “We ran our A team in the DMR and they ran great and their time should definitely get them into the national meet. … On paper, we’re just as good as anybody in the country.
“We were third in the country last year, and before that we were seventh, so we’re going to be in the mix again in three weeks when we go to the NCAA meet.”
In the field, Emily Morris won the women’s shot put with a throw of 15.39 meters, while Dominick Padovano took the ribbon in the men’s weight throw with a personal best toss of 18.98 meters.
A new Alex Wilson and Meyo Track record was set in the women’s mile, with two runners besting Rebecca Tracy’s 4:33.53, set at the 2013 invitational. Unattached Becca Addison set the new standard in with a 4:30.70 mark, while Saucony’s Nicole Sifuentes posted a time of 4:32.36.
The Irish next head to the Atlantic Coast Conference Championships, held Thursday through Saturday in Blacksburg, Virginia. For the latest updates on Irish track & field, follow @NDXCTF on Twitter and like Notre Dame Cross Country/Track & Field on Facebook.
