LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The University of Notre Dame men’s and women’s track& field teams saw strong individual performances on Saturday as the Fighting Irish and Louisville teamed up to compete against Indiana and Michigan State in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge at Cardinal Park in Louisville, Kentucky.
The Big Ten representatives won the day, however, as the Hoosiers and Spartans defeated the Irish and Cardinals 89-76 on the women’s side and 96-64 on the men’s side.
The Irish women claimed seven event victories, highlighted by a strong day from Parker English. The freshman led the way in the sprint events, topping the field in the 100 meters (12.09) and 200 meters (23.71) and helping the Irish 4×400-meter A relay team, including Michelle Rotondo, Jordan Shead and Amber Lalla, to a second-place finish (3:37.13).
Lalla (54.18) and Shead (54.80) notched a 1-2 finish in the 400 meters, and Kaila Barber claimed victory in the 100-meter hurdles (13.48). Emily Carson (long jump, 6.00 meters), Mary Esther Gourdin (triple jump, 12.54 meters) and Carly Loeffel (javelin, 39.88 meters) also notched first place in their respective events. On the men’s side, the Irish also picked up a pair of victories, as freshman Greg Bombara continued to impress in the javelin (64.65 meters) and Keith Mesidor won the long jump (7.29 meters). Harvey Smith places third in the 400 meters (48.20), while Ben Harvel (400-meter hurdles, 55.96) and Nate Richartz (pole vault, 5.10 meters) also took third in their respective events. Also in third place was the Irish relay team of Alex Groesch, John Rutkowski, Aaron Dunn and Smith.
