Irish Continue Win Streak at the Elite Invitational

COLUMBUS, Ohio. — The University of Notre Dame fencing team continued its undefeated season after going 5-0 at the Elite Invitational Sunday at Ohio State University. The Irish defeated Wayne State (22-5 & 26-1), Ohio State (19-8 & 15-12), Air Force (23-4 & 22-5) University of Pennsylvania (16-11 & 18-9), and John Hopkins (23-4 & 21-6) to improve to 12-0 as a team this season.

In the opening match against Wayne State, the Irish men came out strong with a 22-5 win and the women dominated in a 26-1 win. The Ohio State matches saw three perfect foil bouts with 3-0 wins from Nick Itkin, Andrew Machovec, and Marcello Olivares. On the women’s side Neve Harrison and Daria Kudriavtseva also recorded perfect bouts. Both the Irish men and women defeated Ohio State in a strong fashion 19-8 and 15-12.

The Air Force and Johns Hopkins matches were also commanding wins for the Irish as the men’s team defeated Air Force 23-4 and the women’s team came away with a 22-5 victory over the Falcons. The Irish saw eight perfect bouts on the men’s side and five on the women’s side. The Johns Hopkins bouts also saw the Irish in full control as ten total bouts propelled the Irish to 23-4 and 21-6 wins.

Senior Andrew Machovec and junior Marcello Olivares led the men’s team with thirteen wins and sophomore Neve Harrison led the women’s team with twelve wins. 

UP NEXT

The Irish will be back on the strip for their first meet of the spring semester on Wednesday, January 19. They will travel to the USA Fencing North America Cup in San Jose, California.
