EUGENE, Ore. — The University of Notre Dame men’s track & field team kicked off competition Wednesday at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Hayward Field at the University of Oregon, with two Fighting Irish individuals earning second-team All-America honors.
Senior Chris Giesting finished fourth in the third heat of the 400 meter semifinals with a time of 46.03, but did not advance to Friday’s final. In finishing 10th overall, Giesting earned second-team All-America honors.Â
Sophomore Nathan Richartz also earned his first All-America stripe, finishing tied for 14th place in the pole vault with a height of 5.15m for second-team recognition. He became the first Irish field athlete to earn an All-America honor since Kevin Schipper earned both indoor and outdoor pole vault recognition in 2012.
The Irish men’s 4×400-meter relay saw its season end after an impressive showing at the East Preliminary, finishing in 22nd place (3:10.53). The group, consisting of Eric Ways, Harvey Smith, Alex Groesch and Giesting, earned honorable mention All-America honors.
With his second-team and honorable mention All-America nods Wednesday, Giesting picked up his 10th and 11th career All-America citations, tying Patrick Feeney (’14) for the most in Irish history.
The women’s competition will begin tomorrow with semifinal races beginning at 7 p.m. EDT. Jade Barber (100-meter hurdles), Margaret Bamgbose (400 meters) and the 4×400-meter relay squad will race in the semifinals of their respective events, while Molly Seidel (10,000 meters) and Emily Morris (shot put) will compete in the finals. The event will air on ESPNU from 7-8:30 p.m. EDT and on ESPN beginning at 8:30 p.m. EDT.
